The focus of this capstone project revolves around a PICO(T) inquiry related to the early initiation of Broad-Spectrum Antibiotics (BSA) within 72 hours of sepsis diagnosis in adult patients admitted in the Intensive Care Units (ICU). The anticipated outcome of this research is to reduce the mortality rate and improve the quality of life. Hence, we developed an interventional plan based on a two-pronged approach – clinical protocols and healthcare professionals’ education. In this paper, we further delve into the intricacies of the plan and design an implementation outline to bring quality improvements to the target population and the selected setting.

Management and Leadership

Some leadership and management strategies and nursing practices are crucial to ensure interprofessional collaboration while implementing our two-pronged interventional plan.

Leadership Strategies

  • Clear Communication Channels: Establishing transparent communication channels among healthcare professionals through regular meetings and feedback sessions will ensure that all team members are well-informed about the change plan (Alsaedi, 2022). Thus, aligning everyone’s responsibilities with the common goal of improving patient outcomes and integrating interprofessional. In our case, these channels will help healthcare workers understand the importance of early initiation of antibiotic protocols and address the challenges.

Management Strategies

  • Resource Allocation: Strategic planning and management through effective resource allocation facilitates the implementation of quality improvement and change intervention plans (Kabeyi, 2019). Resource optimization includes managing staffing, training programs, and technological support to implement educational programs and develop clinical guidelines seamlessly. Effective resource optimization requires collaborative efforts from a multidisciplinary team to ensure limited resource wastage, ensuring interprofessional collaboration.

Professional Nursing Practices

  • Timely Assessment and Intervention: Emphasizing the importance of prompt and thorough patient assessment among nursing professionals is essential to swiftly recognizing signs of sepsis and ensuring timely initiation of antibiotic therapy (See, 2022). This nursing practice is correlated with the intervention of clinical protocols and professional education to introduce regular monitoring of vital signs, laboratory results, and patient response into nursing care plans, ensuring patients receive early intervention.
